Dear Diane,
I never met Pietro. My father told me a little of his brother, Pietro, though. Pietro was supposed to have gone to Kirkwall in Orkneys to work for his uncle Lazaro in the 1920's, when he met your grandmother on the way up there in the train. The two ran away together and ended up in Edinburgh.
I was only a teenager at the time when my father told me that a lady had come into the chip shop he owned to let him know that she was his niece and her surname was Alexander. This is all I really know about your family.
There was always a sense that Pietro had let the family down by not going to Kirkwall and no one ever seemed to talk much about it.
My own father was told to replace him - which is how he went to Scotland in the 1920's himself. Of course it all worked out for the best as you will undoubtedly agree as we are all here because of it!
Now that we have made the contact it would be good to keep in touch.
